52 week savings challenge
Last updated: 12 August 2026
The 52 week savings challenge — also called the 52 week money challenge — is a year-long money saving challenge where the amount you save matches the week number: 1 in week 1, 2 in week 2, all the way to 52 in the final week. Add the weeks together and you finish the year with 1,378 saved from deposits that start almost unnoticeably small. Below you'll find the rules, the full week-by-week savings chart, the most popular variations, and a free app that tracks each deposit for you.
How the challenge works
Save your week number each week
Week 1 you set aside 1, week 2 you set aside 2, and so on up to 52 in the final week. In dollars that totals 1,378 over the year; the same pattern works in any currency.
Pick one fixed deposit day
Choose the day your income lands or a quiet weekday and keep it the same all year. A fixed day turns the challenge into a habit instead of a decision you have to make 52 times.
Never miss twice
If a week gets away from you, deposit it with the next one rather than restarting. The chain of completed weeks is what carries the challenge through the expensive months.
Keep it separate from spending money
Send each deposit to a named goal or a separate account. Money left in your everyday balance tends to be spent before the next deposit day.
The 52 week savings chart
Each quarter below shows the weekly amounts, what that block adds, and your running total. The figures are the week numbers themselves, so they apply to any currency.
| Block | Weekly | Saved | Running total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–13 (Quarter 1) | 1 → 13 | 91 | 91 |
| Weeks 14–26 (Quarter 2) | 14 → 26 | 260 | 351 |
| Weeks 27–39 (Quarter 3) | 27 → 39 | 429 | 780 |
| Weeks 40–52 (Quarter 4) | 40 → 52 | 598 | 1,378 |
Quarter 1 asks for only 91 across thirteen weeks, while the final quarter asks for 598 — which is exactly why the last three months are where most attempts stall.

Popular variations
Reverse 52 week challenge
Start at 52 and count down to 1. The hardest weeks land in January while motivation is highest, and December — usually the most expensive month — only asks for 1.
Flat 52 week challenge
Save the same amount, around 26.50, every week. The year-end total is identical at roughly 1,378 but each deposit is predictable, which suits a fixed budget.
Double or half challenge
Multiply every week by two for a 2,756 year, or halve it for 689. The pattern is what matters, not the size of the numbers.
Pick-a-week challenge
Print the 1–52 list and each week cross off whichever amount you can afford. Every number gets used once, so the total still lands at 1,378.
Run it in SaveQuest
A 52-week plan lives or dies on whether you still remember it in week 30. SaveQuest turns each weekly deposit into a logged saving against a named goal, so the running total is always visible instead of buried in a bank balance.
Weekly challenges reset on their own, every completed week extends your streak and earns XP, and leagues put your progress next to friends — the same mechanics that keep the late, expensive weeks from being skipped. If a week looks unaffordable, the subscription tracker usually finds the difference: one cancelled service you never use covers several weeks of deposits.

Common questions
How much do you save in the 52 week challenge?
Adding 1 through 52 gives 1,378 in your chosen currency. Doubling every week gives 2,756; halving gives 689.
Do I have to start in January?
No. Week 1 is simply your first deposit day. Starting mid-year works exactly the same — you finish 52 weeks later.
What if I miss a week?
Add it to the next deposit, or swap it with a smaller week you have not used yet if you are following the pick-a-week version. Don't restart from week 1.
Is the reverse version better?
For many people, yes. It front-loads the large deposits into the months when motivation is strongest and leaves the smallest amounts for the holiday season.
